What is the microbiota?

Did you know? On average, we host 1 to 2 kg of bacteria on the surface and inside our bodies.

Microbiota: An Essential Shield for Healthy Skin and Hair

The microbiota, an ecosystem made up of billions of micro-organisms, plays a crucial role in the health of our skin and scalp. A veritable protective barrier, it helps us to combat external aggression, regulate hydration and promote healing. Discover what the microbiota is, its specific role for skin and hair, and why it's essential to nurture it with gentle, respectful care.

What is the microbiota?

The microbiota corresponds to all the micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi or viruses present on or in the human body. The microbiome corresponds to all their genes. There are different microbiota in the body: the skin microbiota, the oral and nasopharyngeal microbiota, the pulmonary microbiota, the vaginal microbiota and the intestinal microbiota. The intestinal microbiota is the most important of these, with 100,000 billion microorganisms that contribute to the proper functioning of our body and our health. It performs metabolic functions essential to digestion, forms a barrier to pathogenic bacteria and stimulates the immune system. The skin microbiota, which we're interested in here, helps maintain healthy skin by protecting against skin aggression and infection. Each area of the body, whether scalp, underarms or face, has a unique microbial composition, adapted to the pH, moisture and sebum requirements of that region.

Acne, oily skin, redness, atopy... what causes it?

When the skin is healthy, its microbiota contains mainly good or saprophytic bacteria. They feed on sebum and dead skin cells, helping to heal the skin, boost immunity and protect against pathogenic bacteria. On the other hand, when unwanted bacteria take over, this leads to an imbalance or dysbiosis of the microbiota, which can manifest itself in problems such as acne, oily skin, redness and atopy. This imbalance is often caused by factors such as age, pollution, diet, unsuitable pH or the use of aggressive products. Taking care of the microbiota is therefore essential to limit these inconveniences and maintain healthy, balanced skin.

Skin and hair microbiota: specific needs

The microbiota of the scalp and skin have unique needs that require gentle, adapted care to avoid damaging this fragile balance:

The scalp: A healthy microbiota limits dandruff and scalp irritation. Using gentle shampoos, without sulfates or harsh preservatives, helps maintain this balance and protect the scalp's natural barrier.

Skin: The cutaneous microbiota plays an essential role in protecting, moisturizing and healing the skin. An imbalance can make the skin more vulnerable to redness, itching and skin infections.

Tips for looking after your microbiota

To preserve the balance of microbial flora, we recommend the use of gentle cleansing products for the skin avoiding sulfatesit is also important toAvoid basic pH washing products (pH > 7) and prefer products with fewer preservatives preservatives can also harm good bacteria. Using products enriched with prebiotics can also help protect your microbiota.

Studies and scientific references

Scientific studies confirm the importance of the microbiota for skin health. For example, research published in PLOS Biology (Sender, Fuchs, & Milo, 2016) shows that the human microbiota comprises roughly as many bacteria as human cells, a balance essential to health (PLOS). Research has also shown that supporting the microbiota with prebiotics limits the risk of imbalances, reducing dysbiosis-related skin problems (The American Microbiome Institute)
