What is Aloe vera?
Native to South and East Africa, and subsequently introduced to North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, Asia, the Mediterranean countries and the West Indies, this plant has been known for thousands of years for its many virtues.
In ancient Egypt, it was the plant whose "blood" gave beauty, health and eternity. It was part of the embalming ritual and accompanied the pharaoh into the afterlife.
Aloe vera is a fat plant 60 to 80 centimetres tall. Its leaves are green, fleshy and edged with thorns. Its yellow or orange flowers are trumpet-shaped. Aloe vera plants take around 3 years to reach harvestable size, and remain productive for 3 to 4 years after maturity. They can produce around fifty leaves during their lifetime.
