What is the microbiota?

Did you know? On average, we host 1 to 2 kg of bacteria on the surface and inside our bodies.

What is microbiota?

The microbiota corresponds to all the micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi or viruses present on or in the human body. The microbiome corresponds to all their genes. There are different microbiota in the body: the skin microbiota, the oral and nasopharyngeal microbiota, the pulmonary microbiota, the vaginal microbiota and the intestinal microbiota. The intestinal microbiota is the most important of these, with 100,000 billion microorganisms that contribute to the proper functioning of our body and our health. It performs metabolic functions essential to digestion, forms a barrier to pathogenic bacteria and stimulates the immune system. As for the cutaneous microbiota, it helps maintain healthy skin by protecting it from aggression and skin infections.

Acne, oily skin, redness, atopy... what can cause them?

When the skin is in good health, its microbiota is composed mainly of "good" bacteria: so-called saprophytic bacteria. They feed on sebum and dead skin cells. These bacteria play an important role in healing, skin immunity and protection against "bad" bacteria: pathogens. When pathogens develop in excessive quantities, imbalances appear, known as dysbiosis.

Microbiota imbalance can be caused by various factors: age, gender, pollution, diet, etc. The skin's pH can also be a source of disturbance. This imbalance manifests itself in skin damage such as acne, oily skin, redness and atopy.

Tips for looking after your skin microbiota

To preserve the balance of microbial flora, we recommend the use of gentle cleansing products for the skin , avoiding sulfates. It is also important toavoid cleansing products with a basic pH (pH > 7) and to prefer products with as few or no preservatives as possible , as preservatives can also harm good bacteria. Using products enriched with prebiotics can also help protect your microbiota.

At YODI, all our products have a pH close to the skin and scalp, are sulfate-free, preservative-free and enriched with prebiotics to respect the skin's microbiota.
