Silicone-free shampoo. Why try it in 2021?

02 October 2022

Silicone is present in many hair care products today. Of course, it makes hair particularly soft and shiny... But unfortunately, this chemical component is also, and above all, harmful both to us and to our environment. See for yourself!

Let's get started: do you know what silicones are?

Silicones are a large family ofsynthetic elements derived from silicon. Silicon undergoes a number of chemical transformations and polymerizations with oxygen, and takes the form of oil, resin and plastic. Silicone is often referred to as "liquid plastic".

These substances surround us in everyday life, as they are an alternative to plastic, providing materials of many different consistencies. We find them in cosmetics, but also often in DIY, kitchen utensils and even breast implants.

Silicones have long been and still are used in cosmetics: we explain why.

Silicone is everywhere in your bathroom: in face and body care products, shampoos and conditioners, creams, masks and make-up!

Unfortunately, there are several reasons why they have spread so quickly to all our cosmetics:

  • The short-term texture effect: Silicone gives cosmetic products that famous smooth, slippery feel that may make you think of immediate improvement, but if it smoothes hair, it does so by sheathing it in an "occlusive" film. Hair appears soft, moisturized and sheathed. Over time, however, this sheath will end up suffocating the hair and making it more fragile.
  • The surface effect: Silicones are used in many skin and hair care products to achieve immediate results on the surface of the skin or hair, but they are inert ingredients that do not provide any in-depth benefits for your skin or hair.
  • They are inexpensive compared to natural active ingredients that perform the same functions, and are easy to incorporate into formulas. So, to avoid them, you really need to pay attention to the composition of your products.

The formulas of our Yodi powder shampoos contain no silicones or sulfates: composed exclusively of natural active ingredients, they thoroughly cleanse your hair and scalp, fulfilling their promise of lightness and softness for your hair. An irritated scalp shampoo perfect for your hair.

So how to unmask silicones in a shampoo formula: follow the guide!

Not everyone is an expert chemist! Fortunately, these components are fairly easy to identify; a quick glance at a product's list of ingredients is all it takes. But you still need to know their names...

To find them, look for ingredients ending in :

  • thicone: dimethicone, cyclomethicone
  • thiconol: dimethiconol
  • siloxane: cyclopentasiloxane

Another solution is to check apps such as Yuka and Clean Beauty to find out if your cosmetics, and especially your shampoo, contain silicones.

Finally, visit the brand websites and ask questions about the ingredients in your shampoo formulas.

A final word of advice: if you have fragile, highlighted or color-treated hair, avoid shampoos containing sulfates.

A silicone- and sulfate-free shampoo is a good starting point for healthy hair!

6 reasons to switch to a silicone-free shampoo :

On the surface, silicones seem like a magic wand for hair. The reality is quite different: they only act on the surface, like bandages, without repairing the hair in depth. They even tend to have harmful effects, and not just on your hair... Let us tell you a little more about the importance of switching to silicone-free shampoo!

    1. Rebalance your scalp

By nature, scalp skin is self-regulating. Silicone, however, forms a film on the skin that clogs pores, suffocates itand prevents it from breathing. The natural balance of the scalp is affected: the skin is dried out and irritated, which can lead to itching, dandruff and even hair loss. To cope, the scalp secretes more sebum and hair regrays faster.

Applying a silicone-free shampoo removes this deceptively protective film and restores the scalp's regulating action.

In addition to being silicone-free, Yodi shampoos are enriched with prebiotics to protect and strengthen the microbiota.

In addition to silicone-free shampoo, it's also important to choose the right hairbrush to limit the stress on your scalp: while plastic and metal tend to irritate the skin, soft, natural bristles will gently detangle your hair.

    2. A less intense washing rhythm

Once a silicone-free shampoo has been integrated into your routine and the scalp's skin balance has been restored, its action on sebum regulation is more effective. It greases less often and the hair's clean appearance is prolonged, allowing you tospace out your washings. You save time and money, and take care of your hair at the same time!

If you'd like to wash your hair less often, it's also in your plate: avoid foods rich in saturated fats and additives that contribute to the overproduction of sebum, and instead favor B vitamins, such as vegetables and lactic ferments to protect the hair fiber.

    3. Better hair growth

Want a long mane? It'll be easier without silicone! As you may have read, shampoos containing silicone help to clog the pores of your scalp. The film created prevents cell renewal. What's more, the irritation caused leads to brittleness and massive hair loss.

A silicone-free shampoo eliminates this suffocating film and boosts hair growth over the long term.

For the most impatient of you, there's another gesture that will help speed up hair growth: tying your hair up. Without over-tightening, opt for a hairstyle rather than leaving your hair loose and therefore more exposed to external aggressions: wind, pollution, dust or even your recurring hand movements.

     4. A more natural feel

Despite the well-known sensorial benefits of these chemicals, shampoos and conditioners containing silicones are far less effective than they appear.

Their surface action doesn't reflect the reality of the hair, which is split, brittle and dehydrated beneath the film that coats it. Considerably weighed down, hair loses volume, loses shine and falls out.

On the other hand, the application of a silicone-free shampoo allows hair to regain its lightness and volume and allows hair care products to work their magic. The small plastic particles that clog the scales gradually disappear, and nourishing hair care products can once again take effect and beautify the hair.

Another tip to enhance your healthy hair: apply a vegetable oil to your ends and lengths. Muesli & Pure Vanilla Precious Oil deeply nourishes your hair, leaving it free of siliconized occlusive film, while depositing its delicious fragrance.

    5. Switch to silicone-free shampoos: an ecological gesture

Choosing the right shampoo can be a conscious and committed act!

Few people know it, but the silicones contained in conventional shampoos are not biodegradable and have asignificant environmental impact. Unfortunately, there are few regulations on this subject.

Silicones are water-dispersible and often pass through wastewater treatment plants. They pollute the oceans and nature, taking over 500 years to decompose.

Did you know? The cosmetics industry is responsible for around 3% of the plastic (solid and liquid microplastics) discharged into the oceans.

This problem is all the more acute in countries that discharge their wastewater into marine environments.

Consuming silicone-free cosmetics helps to reduce man's impact on nature.

    6. Reduce your health risks

Although the negative impact of silicones on human health has not yet been formally proven, theiruse is becoming increasingly controversial.

According to recent studies carried out for the European Commission on the subject of REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals), cyclotetrasiloxane and cyclopentasiloxane, called D4 and D5 respectively for simplicity's sake, are potentially carcinogenic. Their concentration in a product has been limited by European regulations since 2020.

These studies have also established that the widely used dimethicone is a potential endocrine disruptor: a substance likely to deregulate your hormonal system and cause the onset of certain diseases, over the long term.

Beyond its direct effect on health, silicone's impact on the environment, as explained above, does not leave us out in the cold. We are part of the water cycle and the food chain: water contaminated by these chemicals and fish ingesting liquid plastics and microplastics sooner or later end up in our glasses and plates. Silicones end up indirectly in our bodies.

Frequently asked questions about silicone-free shampoo

If you're not sure how to make the right choice, we'll help you by answering any questions you may have about silicone-free shampoos.

How to choose the best silicone-free shampoo for your hair type?

There are numerous silicone-free shampoos to suit every hair type, but it's not always easy to make a choice. That's why we've come up with a few tips to help you select the one that will best care for your hair... But before we reveal our little secrets, we'd like to confide in you the biggest of them all: "formulas with as many natural ingredients as possible will be suitable for as many of you as possible!" So Yodi silicone-free shampoos offer all the qualities your hair needs to stay healthy and beautiful. Whether your hair is oily, dry, color-treated, curly or lacking volume... follow the guide to find out how to make it shine:

If you have oily hair:

Take great care of your scalp to regulate its sebum production. You need a very gentle formula, with a neutral pH for the scalp. Your shampoo should cleanse your hair without aggressing it or weighing down the fiber. And above all, wash your hair at intervals to avoid making the roots even greasier.

Yodi's silicone-free powder shampoos are enriched with prebiotics and have a pH close to that of the skin, helping to repair your scalp. We recommend Douceur de Lait d'Amande for this type of hair to restore lightness, softness and volume.

Your hair is rather dry...

Choose anourishing and moisturizing shampoobased on plant oils, such as sweet almond oil, or aloe vera, a plant composed essentially of water. Not to mention argan oil, another high-performance nourishing oil. These last two ingredients are also found in Nutritive Argan, Yodi's sulfate- and silicone-free shampoo, ideal for nourishing dry hair.

Which shampoo is right for curly hair?

Curly hair is often equally dry, so don't hesitate to choose the same ingredients as for dry hair. They'll bring shine and suppleness to your hair, and nourish it from root to tip to redefine your curls.

What about color-treated hair?

Hair needs a gentle formula that preserves color over time. For example, rice extract to prevent oxidation (found in Douceur de Lait d'Amande) or aloe vera to protect hair fiber and hair color (found in Nutritive Argan) are ideal partners for reviving color with every wash.

Also remember to choose a shampoo containing moisturizing ingredients to hydrate your hair, which coloring tends to dry out.

SOS, scalp in distress!

As we said earlier, conventional hair products can be aggressive and cause scalp irritation. If this causes itching, it's best to avoid harsh chemicals in your products, especially artificial fragrances.

This multi-functional ingredient, aloe vera, can also provide relief by reducing skin inflammation.

How does the hair transition work?

Once you have your silicone-free shampoo in your hands, you'll undergo a hair transition as you move from a chemical routine to natural care.

You'll need to be patient, but rest assured, it's worth it! The result is healthy, naturally soft, shiny hair.

This transition may take more or less time, depending on your hair type. During this period, your problems are likely to be exacerbated: your hair is likely to be greasier, less smooth and more tangled, but this is a necessary evil before you can achieve beautiful natural hair.

Silicone-free shampoo will clarify and detoxify your hair, eliminating silicone residues and other potentially irritating chemicals. Here are a few tips to help your hair through this transition:

  • Apply nourishing care and natural hair masks to deeply nourish hair
  • natural drying to heat sources
  • Massage your scalp to stimulate blood circulation and boost hair growth.
