Bakuchiol: a powerful anti-aging plant active ingredient

08 March 2023

A newcomer to the world of cosmetic miracle ingredients, Bakuchiol is a natural anti-aging agent that competes with retinol.

You've probably heard of or even used a serum or cream that contains retinol. This synthetic active ingredient is derived from vitamin A and has been known for some time for its anti-aging actions, in fact it reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and gives elasticity to the skin by contributing to the production of collagen. It also has a slight keratolytic effect that helps control hyperpigmentation and therefore potential spots that tend to appear on our skin with age. Retinol is also known for its effectiveness against blemishes and even acne by controlling the natural production of sebum by blocking the excessive activity of the sebaceous glands as well as by eliminating certain bacteria that are harmful to the skin.

It appears to be an ideal active ingredient, however it still has some significant disadvantages, especially for sensitive skin, it tends to dry them out and cause irritation or redness, and it is photosensitizing and may therefore cause brown spots if used during exposure to daylight without being associated with a sunscreen. Finally, some forms of Retinol come from animals (egg yolk or fish liver oil), so it can not be introduced into a vegan product. It is therefore these points that make the difference with Bakuchiol.

But what is Bakuchiol?

You may not know it yet, but this anti-oxidant can revolutionize your beauty routine. It is a natural active ingredient that has the advantage of offering the same anti-aging virtues as retinol but without its inconvenience. Indeed, thanks to its antioxidant effect and its anti-inflammatory action, this ingredient effectively fights against skin aging and thus reduces the signs of aging. Also like hyaluronic acid, it is a real booster for cell renewal and has an antibacterial action that fights acne. It acts very gently, without aggressing the skin and does not cause any discomfort after application. It is for all these reasons that we find more and more this ingredient in our beauty products.

The origin of Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is extracted from the seeds of a plant that can be found in India or Sri Lanka: Psoralea corylifolia also called Babchi. This plant with purple flowers was formerly used in the Chinese traditional medicine for the treatment of leprosy. Indeed, we could find a treatment in the form of compressed powder to be ingested but also in the form of ointment to be applied on the zone of the body or the face damaged by the disease.

More currently, it is still used to treat certain diseases (mainly skin diseases) such as leukoderma which affects the skin by causing white spots.

It is also scientifically proven that it has an anti-cancerous action.

The active part of the plant that is used in these treatments is the same as in cosmetic use: it is the seed.

It is possible to find Psoralea corylifolia oil or its seeds on the market, but you have to be careful with its use because in addition to Bakuchiol, they contain other molecules that can be irritating or allergic.

How to use Bakuchiol?

In addition to these medicinal uses, Bakuchiol is a real beauty ally. Indeed, in organic cosmetics, it is beginning to be known and present in various products on the market. The scientifically proven effectiveness of this active ingredient appeals to consumers whose skin is marked by the signs of age, blemishes or a lack of radiance. Moreover, unlike Retinol, it can be applied to sensitive skin without causing tightness, dryness or redness.

This natural ingredient can be used in organic and vegan skincare.

This active ingredient can be found in many cosmetic products, particularly in creams and serums, which are used without rinsing for better penetration of the product into the epidermis and thus optimal effectiveness.

Moreover, as cell regeneration takes place during sleep, we recommend application before bedtime on cleansed skin, as a night care for an ideal result.

It can also be present in oils, with the same use as our oil serum "Retinol Like Vegetable".

What are the benefits of Bakuchiol?

As we have seen previously, Bakuchiol has many positive effects regardless of the nature of the skin:

  • - It reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines,
  • - It boosts the production of collagen which gives a better elasticity to the skin and gives a good look naturally,
  • - It gently exfoliates the skin to remove dead cells,
  • - Its keratolytic action allows to avoid the appearance of brown spots, consequence of a hyperpigmentation,
  • - It has antibacterial properties that eliminate certain bacteria responsible for acne or blackheads.
  • - It controls the rate of sebum by blocking the excessive activity of the sebaceous glands which makes it possible to fight against the imperfections and the greasy skin.

The different forms of Bakuchiol

In its medicinal use, Bakuchiol could be used as a compressed powder (tablets to be ingested). Also, for local applications on wounds, the powder was mixed with an oil to form a kind of ointment.

This famous powder was obtained by grinding the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia.

For cosmetic use, an extraction technique has been developed to obtain a better purity of the active ingredient, which is now over 99%. We then obtain a yellow liquid ready to be integrated into our skin care products.

Contraindications for the use of Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is a soft active ingredient which does not cause irritations, neither drying nor redness. It thus does not present any against-recommendation and this even for the most sensitive skins.

It is not contraindicated for pregnant women and is not photo-sensitizing.

How does Bakuchiol work?

Because of its chemical composition, Bakuchiol is an anti-oxidant as well as a very effective anti-inflammatory. Also, it is a very good antibacterial, it prevents the development of bad bacteria on the skin without attacking it which avoids the overproduction of sebum, it is then a very good ally against acne and all other imperfections. It also stimulates the retinoid receptors which contributes to a more intense production of collagen and a more important renewal of the cells.

Why use Bakuchiol instead of Retinol?

Despite their different chemical compositions, clinical studies have demonstrated the similarity of the anti-aging effects of Retinol and Bakuchiol on the following criteria: the reduction of skin dryness, the reduction of wrinkles and fine lines, the radiance of the complexion, the firmness, the elasticity, the appearance of the eye contour or the shine of the skin.

These studies also reveal the similarity of their effects on acne by measuring sebum production, the bacterial population and the intensity of inflammation.

It is therefore preferable to use Bakuchiol, which unlike Retinol does not cause any discomfort after use.
